Mysterious hell gate, the connection between two worlds
In some horror or non-fiction film, you may see some thing called, the portal, which is the connection between two worlds, our world and another. I have just re-watched the Lord of the Rings again, and this tutorial was comprised from some scene from that film. You may use this technique to create a poster for a similar film.
Step 1: Prepare a photo like this one :

Use Burn tool – Midtones,exposure : 70% and go over the two sides once

Add a “Curves” layer on top,and adjust it like this:

The photo will become really dark.

Step 2:Use soft round and low opacity brush with RED color and go over this place (on a new layer of course) :

(you can use soft round eraser to erase the mistake)

Step 3 : Find some texture and slap on it.I use this,put it on top of the original photo but below everything else

Change the texture layer blending mode to Overlay with opacity of 80% and we have this

Create new layer,paint Black with soft round brush to the door,like this :

Finally,add some creepy eyes to the door,adjust blending mode to how you see fit.

In addition,you can add a text if you want.

Done
Layers order : Red paint —> Curve —-> Texture —–> Eyes —->Text —-> Black paint —-> Photo
