Feather under the water, a beautiful effect

Feather under the water, a beautiful effect

Yesterday, I watched my favorite movie “Final Fanatasy: Advent Children” again, and one of its scenes is the main character’s mobile fall into the water slowly, and the scene continued with the animation of the phone under the water. And, bum, a new photoshop tutorial has come, but this time will be a feather instead.

Step 1 : Prepare a white background (size of the canvas is 800×900)

Step 2: Use gradient, yes, gradient :).First select the foreground color as #3567a6 and then the background color as #0a1b30.Then fill gradient on the new layer so that you have the result like below :

ScreenHunter_003

Notice: This is an additional step in case you later see that your water is too dark at the bottom, not a must. But i recommend this although it may be kind of a hassle to do and nothing much will change for you to notice until later.

Duplicate the Gradient layer and add a quick mask to the duplicated layer (and this layer will be on top of the original one of course).Adjust the Opacity of this duplicated layer to 65%,then use a soft round brush (the size of the brush is depend on you, doesn’t matter much) and the its opacity will be around 10-25% only, use it to brush around in the Mask with Black Color (in Quick Mask, black means erase),brush it until you have something like below.

Quick Help : in case you don’t know where is the quick mask button,it is in the same line with the “Create new layers” button, and it looks like this

ScreenHunter_004

Step 3:Now,next we are going to use cloud filters.Use selection tools (rectangle one) to draw a selection that have a shape similar to the canvas but smaller, and then Filters>Renders>Cloud (on a new layer of course and named it “Water”,i actually don’t name it but i say it here so that it will be easy to follow since i will mention about it again in step 4)

ScreenHunter_005

After that,enlarge/resize the new layer all the way like the below

ScreenHunter_006

Then, use Filters>Artistic>Plastic Wrap (value like this from up to bottom : 14,3,11)

ScreenHunter_007

Free Transform>Distort, make it become something like below:

ScreenHunter_008

Draw a selection like the pic below:

ScreenHunter_08-2

Then go to Filters>Render>Lighting Effect

Lightype will go to : Omni

The value of intensity should be around 30+ only, too much will be bad,and keep the circle in the middle.

ScreenHunter_08-3

After you have added Lighting Effect, use soft round brush, opacity 100% to erase around, follow the perspective, make the bottom looks like it is gradually disappearing

Note: You will probably notice that the cloud filters below is different.I will explain : the steps above is just a guide for you to know how to come to this step, plus as you know Cloud Filter is very random,so you will have to Ctrl+ F a lot before you can get what you want. The Cloud Filters i use below and till the end of the tutorial is what i have tried a lot before come across it.

ScreenHunter_009

And,so,you change the Blending of the layer to Linear Dodge and adjust the “Fill”(under opactiy) to 60%,you will have this :

ScreenHunter_010

Step 4 :Additional Details

Duplicate the “Water” layer to increase the brightness (change the duplicated layer Blending to Color Dodge)

ScreenHunter_011

Duplicate the “Water” layer again, but this time you move the new duplicated one down to bottom of the canvas and “Flip Vertically”,and put it so that you will have something similar to the pic below(ah,don’t forgot to also change the blending to “Color Dodge”and adjust the fill to 74%) :

ScreenHunter_012

Create a new layer on top of all the layers. Then use a soft round brush with size around 900px,opacity should be kept low like around 10-25%,and then brush from the top to bottom in the middle.

ScreenHunter_013

And then add something to the picture in some new layers, there you have it,a nice picture :3 (don’t mind what i add,i only use those as example)

ScreenHunter_001

If you all still see that there is something is missing, well, then what are you waiting for, feel free to add more into it.

Anyways, the tutorial ends here, thx for anyone that has been very patient to follow till the end.

Cilck here to see te final Result

when I start the quick mask the brush is deep red is that supposed to happen? yours is white so i wanted to ask.

P.S. this is the notice just after step 2

  5. Donovan December 6, 2007

@Jason, erm i had that problem too when i first used it.
You don’t need to go into quick mask mode, just duplicate your gradient piece and at the bottom of layers tab, click add vector mask. And your problem should be solved.

Can’t manage to make it with step 2 with the mask stuff i got red aswell this is what i did

new - 800/900 - gradient tool with settings given - duplicate layer (untitled) - change opacity in layer panel from duplicate to 65% - then go to layer and give it vector and use a smooth brush 21px on the dark part but keep getting red

  7. Ryan December 11, 2007

This doesn’t work at all for me. Using the black brush to erase at the start, on my layer mask just leaves me with black everywhere, well, black shading. Same problem again after addign lighting effects, any ideas?

  8. unknown December 12, 2007

Did you use the Quick Mask and erase on it?And did you divine all the things on different layers?

  21. goofy February 26, 2008

WOOOW its sooo nice i didnt made it like you said but I made it, is has been woooow ! thanx for this tips :)

  22. Braintrove.com February 26, 2008

The lighting effect on the top is a bit strong, and definitely too strong on the bottom. Instead of the white glow in the middle of the water, another cloud effect can help make it look like more realistic water.

    Good job though.

  23. Chiara February 28, 2008

I can’t get the ligther color on the bottom in step 2
I set quick mask and painted the bottom with black but nothing canged on my picture. There’s some blending mode to set ore anything? Cause in my picture I only see the other layer with the gradient underneath the masked one.

  24. mel May 8, 2008

very nice, on the last piece i added a gradient overlay affect to the last layer of white at top dark blue at the bottom to blend the light coming down a little easier. Excellent tutorial!
