This photoshop tutorial was inspired from some kinds of racing and fighting games. The result of this typography is very impressive, and it could be applied for game advertising graphics. The most coolest thing is you need to use only one layer to achieve this complex effect.

Step 01:

Create a new document with the size is 8”X4” at 100 dpi. Choose the Type tool (T) and create a text layer for each word in your title (our is 9tutorials and Photoshop) .

I choose Bernard MT Condensed font and set the “9” in 9tutorial to 200 pt, the “P” in Photoshop in Rage to 222pt, and 118pt for the rest

image001

Step 02:

Go to Character Panel (Window>Character) , select letter “9” and set the baseline shift to 50 .Now select the letter “P” ,change the baseline shift to 50 and the horizontal scale to 80%.

Select the word “Photoshop” and set the tracking to 55 .Click the color swatch and fill the text on both layer with gray (R:128 ,G:128 ,B:128)

image002

Step 3:

Choose Select>All layers, then click the layer panel’s fly-out menu and choose Convert to Smart object . This converts the two text layers into one smart object and allows us to apply the effects while reserving the ability to go back and edit the text if necessary.

Now let’s change the background color. Click on the background layer to select it , double -click the Foreground layer swatch in the toolbox ,and enter R:0 , G:40 , B:96 in the Color Picker . Press Alt - Backspace (Mac: Option-Delete) to fill the background layer with this color

image003

Step 4:

Now we can begin stacking the layer styles. Click on the text smart object to select it, click the Add a Layer Style icon at the bottom of the Layers panel , and choose Stroke . We applied a black stroke 6 pixel thick. Keep the Layer Style dialog open.

Step 5:

The next step is to apply a smaller stroke to the outside of this stroke . Choose Outer Flow from the Styles list on the left in the Structure section, set the Blend Mode to Hard Light , bump the Opacity up to 100% ,and set the color to white . In the Elements section, set the Technique to Softer enter 100% for Spread ,and set the Size to 8px .

image004

Step 6:

To fill the text with color, choose Color Overlay, click the color swatch, and enter R:255 , G:150 , B:0. Now set the Blend Mode to Hard Light and the Opacity to 100%. To give the color some variation, click the Gradient Overlay and set the Blend Mode to Overlay. Click the Gradient drop-down menu and choose the Black, White gradient . Now set the Style to Linear, make sure the Align with Layer checkbox is on, set the Angle to -76 ,and Scale to 100%

Step 7:

Next ,click on Inner Glow ,set the Blend Mode to Hard Light ,and select a darker color ( We use R:60 , G:40 , B:11) . Choose Precise for the Technique, Edge for Source ,and 9 Pixels for Size ( this can vary depending on how much depth you want).

Now choose Inner Shadow to create a highlight effect. Change the Blend Mode to Overlay ,set the color to white Opacity to 100% , 133o for Angle ,and turn off Use Global Light. Distance, Choke ,and Size may vary depending your text (we set ours to 6px ,20% and 6px ,respectively )

image005

Step 8:

Click on Bevel And Emboss , set the Style to Inner Bevel , Technique to Smooth , lower the Depth to 75%,click Up for Direction ,enter 6px for Size and leave Soften at 0px.Next , enter 138 degrees for Angle ,turn on Use Global Lighting ,and input 330 degrees for Altitude .Next, change the Highlight Mode to Color Dodge and the Shadow Mode to Multiply ,then set the Opacity to 75% for each mod.

image006

Step 9:

Now click on Texture below Bevel and Emboss .Click on the Pattern Picker swatch and select the Satin texture in upper right corner .The Scale and Depth may need some tweaking (we reduced ours to 75% fir Scale and +25% for Depth) but the overall amount of embossing is controlled in the main Bevel and Emboss dialog through the Size and Depth sliders.

image007

Step 10 :

Then , click on Drop Shadow. Change the Blend Mode to Multiply, and apply these settings:
Opacity: 65%
Angle: 138o
Distance: 20px
Size: 9px

Press Ok

image008

Step 11 :

Press Ctrl + T (Mac: Command-T) to enter the Free Transform. Hold down the Shift key while you click and drag one of the corners to make the image a little smaller .Then Control click (PC : Right Click) inside the bounding box and choose Skew from the menu .Click-and-hold the middle handle on the left side and drag down to skew text . Then click -and drag the top-middle handle to the right to make it skew from the center and press Return (PC: Enter)

The most interesting thing is that this complex effect is just on one layer, so you could change, resize or transform if you want easily.

I must say, it is a nice chunky font, not sure on your texture though, perhaps a little too prominent.

There are lots of reasons why people suggest to use multiple layers rather than piling everything onto the one. But I think it is good that you have done something with type, it is a dying art it would seem.
