In the recent project, I need to create some illustrated art works for my client, however my Illustrator skill is not well enough. As the result, I have tried with Photoshop, and the result is amazing, I just take more than 30 minutes to finalize the first one, and less than 15 minutes for next ones. Of course, you could do it well, just take a look at my tutorial.

Step 01

Now, choose any image you like. In this tutorial, I select an image of Liv Tyler to process. Then, duplicate the layer, call it “Liv”

Step 02

Go to Filter -> Artistic -> Cut Out, and set the value like this
Number of Levels: 8
Edge Simplicity: 2
Edge Fidelity: 2

Then, you need to cut out Liv Tyler. You should use Quick Mask, combine with eraser tool in Soft Brush to make a perfect cut. Then create a new layer, “Background”, under the “Liv” layer. Fill it with the white color

Step 03

Create a new layer, above the “Background” layer. Then you use the Shape Custom Tool, and choose the shape “Registration target 2″. Next, you choose the color you prefer and make a large scale of it like the demonstration below.

You will have this result:

Pretty nice, right ? Let add some more effects or you could stop at this step

Step 04

Create a new layer. You open the Brush panel, and set the following values:

Brush Tip Set -> Select “Star Brush 70px” ; Spacing: 30%
Shape Dynamic -> Size Jitter” 100% ; Minimum Diamter: 20%
Scattering: Check “Both Axes” ; Scatter: 1000%

You should try to draw around the illustrated Liv Tyler. Then go to Layer Style -> Gradient Overlay and choose the options like below:

To finish, duplicate the layer, then go to Filter -> Blur -> Gaussain Blur -> Radius 2.0.

If you like, pick up a flower, then apply the same progress for step 1 and 2, then set the Blending Options is Multiply, you will have a cutie tatto in her arm like my final result.

If you have any question, please post on the comment section below, I will try to answer them as soon as possible. I love to see your results, so please let me know if you finish something.

you have to choose to show all shapes, by using the > arrow in the drop down of shape options.

awesome tutorial, i’ve been looking everywhere for how to create these kinds of effects, do you have anyway to do the animated floral affects similar to this that are popping up everywhere?

Lisa and nikku, I couldn’t find it either, but the thing is that it doesn’t look like that figure. It looks very different.. It’s the third last row number six from left.. if that makes sence :)

to get registration target 2, go to the custom tool shapes, and on the top left of that tab that opens when you go to select a shape, there is a little black arrow; click that and select “all”, then click ok. it is one of the ones near the bottom. there should be no need to download anything
