Loading ...This special effect would be very useful to apply to metallic layout, or you could try it to create a ruby stone. I have just found that after trying some techniques for my new project.
Step 1 : Create a new document,size is up to your choice,as mine,i set 500 x 500.
Step 2: Use Ellipse Tool to draw a circle (hold Shift before start to draw to make it a circle),again,the size is not definite,choose the size that you think the easiest to work with(mine has radius of 2).Make the color of the Circle black.
Step 3: Next,use pentool to draw a shape(remember its size should only =1/2 of the circle).Then duplicate it,Free Transform the duplicated one and Flip it vertically.Use the pic below as reference for this step.Fill both with White.
Step 4:Draw another Circle with Ellipse Tool again but with radius = 4/5 radius of the first Cirlce.Then put the new Circle in the center of the first one.Then Blending Option>Stroke> Position : Inside
Size : 13
Color : #585858
Step 5: Come back the layer of the first circle.Blending Option> Gradient Overlay: Color -Use the normal Black to White one(put Reverse); Style – Reflected; Blend Mode- Linear Burn. And Blending Option > Stroke : Position – Normal; Size : 2; Color : #3b3b3b.
Note : The value i use for step 4 and step 5 may only work with mine,if you draw things in different size,you may have to experiment to find your suitable value.
Step 6: Put all of the things in a group and then Merge Group ( you can duplicate the group before Merge in case you want to return and fix something later)
Step 7:Duplicated the new layer you just created by Merging the group.Then Gaussian Blur the duplicated one with value of 4.8
Then Blending Option >Blending Mode> Linear Dodge and put the duplicated layer on top.
Step 8 : Make a new layer on top of everything,then fill it with black.Then Blending Option > Linear Dodge. Go to Filter >Render > Lens Flare.
Choose 105mm Prime(100%) and make the Flare at the center of our circle thing.Use Soft Brush to erase around.
In the end, Filter > Distort > Ocean Ripple : Give both value 9.
The background is just some kind of gradient and texture.

Try to experiment more on this,it may give out something nicer,after all new effect comes from experimenting.

I really like the tutorial…in the last pic of sample how it comes if it will be more clear…so it looks more good but its okay….thanks for guiding us…. ;)

i stop at step 3 also. flip what?!? right side what?? dude u left out how to do it. i think u was just doing what u usually do for yourself and forgot… most of us are amateurs after all. the over all tutorial a thumbs down :(

The “then” didn’t get put in for nothing.If you still doesn’t get it.It is like this.You draw the shape at which side first is up to you,after you have drawn,duplicated it,flip the duplicated one vertically to the opposite side.About “right side what”,i think you should find out where is your right side and fill the color.
Yeah, It is kinda confusing, I understand the draw a shape on half the circle, Its the not understanding how to properly use the pen tool. and then how exactly you duplicate it (image/..duplicate?), none of us here are very savy obviously.

Each shape on it’s own layer or on the same?
On step 4:
You draw a new circle on a seperate layer? What color should this circle be?
You need to be clear on your layering. That is important in any photoshop tutorials. The result may be phenominal but the guiding of this tutorial leaves room for improvement.
I think just cutting a circle in half, duplicating it, and filling it in with the suggested gray and white tones without using the pen tool at all would work. My end result wasn’t as good, but I have never done this before and I’m sure this isn’t the only way to get a metallic effect. I ended up completely skipping step 3, which is poorly written I believe, and step 6, which is just as bad.
Please give a more in deep on how to do this

OMG, who wrote this? I would have a better chance to randomly fumble through the process blindfolded… with a sledge hammer than I am following these directions. If English isn’t your first language then please forgive the criticism. But you may want to step out the process again, show some more screen shots of how you actually do it and what you need to accomplish at each step, actually read what you wrote and change it to make it clear and concise.
ok…the result is with no doubt VERY NICE, but the step is just way too confusing, if you wanted to add pictures, add as many as you can, (even if you only added a line on it!) so this way more people can actually understand what you’re doing…seriously, from step 3 to 7, the pictures jumps too quickly >.>|||
no offence, but to make a good guide if you do not wish to use the video taping, it requires a lot of pictures, pure text can really confuse people especially to the beginner.
The tut was written by me.After reading the comments,i found out that i have made quite a lot of mistakes.As this was my first,i kinda expected this would happen.I will try to fix thing as soon as possible.Thanks for whoever wrote the feedback
Quick Answer to Sora : Step 4-you don’t need to care about the color of the circle since after you use Gradient Overlay,the original color will be covered by the gradient anyways

Where the heck is blending option? Is it on the toolbar? I can’t find it!
Or, is it even in photoshop 6?
this was done in Photoshop 7+ i think,i don’t know about PS 6.
And the blending option appear if you right click on the layer in layer window.

It would be nice if all the tutorials stated which type of photoshop your using. As not all tutorials work for all photoshop programs. I currently am using elements 3 as i am unable to upgrade. It would save most people a lot of time and trouble if this was posted at the start of your tutorials.

The effect is GREAT..however, like everyone else, I’m having trouble. I’m trying to figure it out myself but ah it’s frustrating. lol Maybe you could revise this? But Step 3..I found a wayyyyy easier way to do it. Ask me =)
Missing steps between 5 and 6. The result of 5 looks nothing like the picture below.
